Frequently Asked Questions

TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT:

Who is the Traffic Commission?

The Traffic Commission is composed of seven department heads of which the Chief of Police is chairperson. The other members are Public Works Director, Planning Director, City Clerk, Fire Chief, Inspector of Wires and City Treasurer. Officer Frank Lombardo is the Clerk of Commission.

How often does the Traffic Commission meet?

They meet the third Thursday of each month, except during the summer when no meetings are held during July and August. The meetings are held in the Henry Hoover Committee Room in City Hall and start at 10:00 am.  These meetings are public and all are welcome.

Can I park overnight on my street?

Overnight is not allowed on any street unless otherwise posted. This is in effect all year round, but the Police enforce this restriction heavily during the winter months. Overnight parking occurs during the hours of 2:00 am to 6:00 am. Signs are posted on all major roadways entering Waltham stating this restriction.

How do I get overnight parking posted on my street?

You must send a completed form to the Traffic Commission to be placed on the agenda. You will need 65% of the residents (one name per address) in the block (s) requested. Other elements are looked at like available off-street parking, street widths, etc. to warrant overnight parking. Overnight parking is allowed only on one side, and parking may be removed on the opposite side for safety reasons. (use form #1 available at the end of FAQ or call Transportation Dept. for a copy)

How do I get parking removed in front of my house?

All streets in the city, unless private, are public ways. Motorists have a right to park in any legal area upon any public way regardless of where they live or travelling to. If you wish to have no parking allowed on your street you must complete a form and send to the Traffic Commission to be placed on the agenda. (use form #2 available at the end of FAQ or call Transportation Department for a copy)

How do I get any other pavement markings or signs on my street?

Contact Transportation Department and we will assist you in answering your questions. Other suggestions might be available to solve your issues.

Why can’t I have a stop sign on my street to quiet traffic?

STOP signs do only one thing: assign right-of-way at an intersection. They are not designed for, nor are they useful in, reducing speed. Further, STOP signs actually increase traffic noise, both from braking and reacceleration.

How do I get handicap parking in front of my house or business?

Forms are available in the Transportation Department.  After the forms are completed the Traffic Commission will vote on whether to approve or deny the request.

A traffic signal is out or malfunctioning, who do I contact?

The Wires Department is responsible for the maintenance of traffic signals in Waltham. They can be contacted at 781-314-3175.
